October Birthstone: Tourmaline
Meet Tourmaline
The gemstone that has more colours compared to other gemstones. In fact, Tourmaline comes in every colour of the rainbow! You might be familiar with the Rainbow Tourmaline which combines every colour imaginable in one gem. Or perhaps, you might have heard of the Watermelon Tourmaline - a delectable looking gem that perfectly resembles the green rind and pink flesh of the refreshing summer fruit. The name “Tourmaline” comes from the Sinhalese words “turamali”, which translates to “unknown gemstones of mixed colours”.

The most colourful stones of the Tourmaline family are given the name Elbaite, which of course includes the Watermelon Tourmaline. The red and pink Tourmalines are known as Rubellites and the blue ones are called Indicolite. It’s interesting how Tourmalines are formed. Molten magma from volcanoes created veins that are prevalent in rocks. As the magma cooled, large cracks in the rocks started to form and were filled with a combination of natural elements like water and trace minerals. These in turn resulted in the creation of tourmaline and other stones. Trace minerals such as iron, lithium or manganese are responsible for giving Tourmalines their vibrant colours, and they display gorgeous hues ranging from pink, red, yellow, orange, green to blue.
