How To Choose Earrings For Your Face Shape
You’re probably already an expert in face contouring or have all the tricks and techniques to flatter your body shape. Just as with your makeup and clothes, choosing the right pair of earrings can really help bring focus to your face and present a chic look that is well put together.
The best way to choose a pair of earring is to work with nature. Pick the pair that will suit your natural face shape. Earrings that flatter are all about balance. For example, if you have a round face, reach for elongated drop and dangle pieces that will give your face a sharper illusion.
I’ve put together some editor picks on what earrings will look best for your face shape. Remember, these are not hard and fast rules. Just a simple guide to picking out earrings that will look best on you. Who knows? You might be surprised and inspired to try on a new earring style!
Oval
Oval! The most versatile face shape for any earrings. Aren’t you lucky! Your face length will be about 1.5 times its width. Your forehead is slightly wider than your chin, and your jaws are rounded instead of angular. This face type easily complements all earring styles, you have no lack of earring choices! Here are some of my picks.
Square
Square face shapes are similar to a round face, but with a wider and distinct squared jawline. Avoid squarish shaped earrings as those make the angular profile of your face even more pronounced. Skip the studs too, as the tiny sizes don’t do your face any favours. Instead, choose drop earrings that are medium to long with rounded edges such as ovals, tear drops and chandeliers. These will help visually soften the sharp angles of your face. A pair of simple or oversized hoop earrings are a great choice!
Oblong
As an oblong face is naturally longer than it is wide, the choice of earrings must be able to play up the width of your face. Break the length of your face visually by playing up your cheekbones. This, you can do by choosing earrings that have lots of volume (think earrings with clusters). Tear drop earrings or dangles work very well on oblong-shaped faces. Bold statement pieces and oversized hoop earrings can bring an illusion of fullness to an oblong face. If you prefer low-key, studs are also a good choice. Otherwise, why not make a bolder statement, right?
Round
Is the length of your face similar to its width, with a less defined jawline? If so, then you’ve got a round-shaped face. To create a sharper look on a round face, stick with earrings that are elongated. Skip the circle studs and hoop earrings. Some great earring choices that will elongate your face and give it a sharper illusion are rectangular, triangular, long ovals and long drop earrings. These all look stunning on round-shaped faces.
Diamond
Prominent cheekbones are usually tell-tale signs of a diamond-shaped face. This is a classical face shape with a pointed chin and a narrow forehead, and is widest at the cheekbones. Because this face shape has got quite a lot of angles going on, you’ll want to steer clear of earrings that are typically diamond in shape, or those narrowing towards the bottom. Pick out earrings that are smaller on the top with wider bottoms, such as tear drop earrings. Studs, pearls, small hoops that stick close to the ear look wonderful on you. If you are into discreet yet long earrings, thin and long threader earrings are perfect. For some drama, fan-shaped or tear drop earrings are your best bet. Now go sparkle like a diamond.
Heart
Awww! Did you know that this face shape is the shape that wins hearts? It has been scientifically proven to be the most visually attractive face shape. A heart-shaped face (sometimes known as the inverted triangle shape) has a wider forehead and cheekbones, tapering towards a narrow jawline and a pointed chin. Choosing the right pair of earrings for this (sweet)heart face includes earrings that are shaped wider at the bottom than they are at the top. Go for chandeliers, triangular earrings, hoops to help balance out the natural heart shape of your face. Tear drop earrings look stunning on heart shape faces as they play up the cheekbones. Go set some hearts aflutter!
Triangle
If you’ve got a narrower forehead but with a wider jaw, then you’re likely to be a triangle-shaped face. For earrings that will flatter this face shape, try earrings that have a curvature to them such as large ovals and tighter circles. Avoid the same upright triangular shape earrings, and also those that have volume at the bottoms as they will emphasize the width of your jaw. Opt for longer, narrow earrings. Drop and dangle earrings work beautifully for this face shape. Go long we say!
