Break These 7 Jewellery Rules Now

· ·

Jewellery is meant to stand out. If you are still keeping conservative boundaries around what you shouldn’t do with your jewellery, it’s time to break these outdated cliché jewellery rules.

1. “Never mix metals.”

We say “Go on and mix them up!”

This age-old adage needs to be put to rest. Why do we impose such strict rules on not wearing more than one metal type in our accessories? Let your inner self shine! You may be one who typically likes rose gold over gold or silver, but don’t stop yourself from wearing all three at the same time. Mix, match, layer and stack them on, and be pleasantly surprised at the novel look that you have created.

    2. “Your jewellery must be a matching set.”

      Boring…

We are talking style here, not regulations. Sticking with a matching set is totally fine if you’re trying to create a certain look. But varying your pieces by mixing textures, accessories size and length can instantly whip up a look that is uniquely you. Layer on different lengths of necklaces, put on a pair of asymmetrical earrings, stack on different thickness rings, and watch that bold diva come alive.

      3. “Pearls and jade are for mature ladies.”

        Say what?

While it may be true that pearls and jade were once considered conservative jewellery, modern-day jewellers have created contemporary inspirations out of these valuable gems. Don’t be afraid to pair pearls with a hip, casual attire for that classy girl charm. Or throw on a pretty jade earring for an easy Sunday brunch. You’re never too young for pearls and jade when they are all the rage now!

        4. “Your earrings must be identical.”

Earrings are earrings, they aren’t twins.

Symmetry is a rule that needs to be tossed out of the window. Have some fun with your earrings! Earrings may be sold as a pair, but that doesn’t mean that you have to wear them as a pair. You can certainly match one earring with another from your collection that will complement each other. Or try on earrings that are asymmetrical or in different lengths. Perhaps you can adorn a drop earring on one ear and a stud on the other. The possibilities are endless.

          5. “Some jewellery is meant only for special occasions.”

You do know that life is short, don’t you?

So go out and live it to the fullest! Have an heirloom accessory that needs to be taken out? Flaunt it! Better yet, wear it with jeans and a casual tee to let it get the attention it deserves.

            6. “Wear only expensive jewellery.”

You’re really missing out if you do.

Brands today are creating fine, luxurious jewellery without the need for you to break the bank. These days, jewellery inspirations are created with conscious intent. Look beyond the big brand names. Smaller jewellers and homegrown brands with good ethos make equally great pieces. Support local and seek out handmade jewellery using high quality, sustainable materials and gemstones. You’ll be sure to find something extra unique, knowing that your accessories will also withstand the test of time.

              7. “Less is more.”

Only if you’re going for a subdued look.

If you’ve mastered the art of piling, stacking, and layering jewellery with finesse, you’ll know that more can make you and your jewellery pop. More is fun! These days, multiple rings on fingers, necklace layering, and even bracelet stacking are making heads turn. Just don’t overdo it. Three to four layers will do the trick nicely, and aim to have different weights or textures in your layering to spice things up a bit.

Where fashion is concerned, there are no hard and fast rules! Above all, have some fun when you are accessorising. Put on what makes you feel good because when you feel good, you’ll look even better.
